Seed & Series A · New York
12bar backs technology founders at Seed and Series A — not just with capital, but with a team that has built, broken, and scaled 20+ startups of our own. We know what the hard parts feel like because we've lived them.
“Most investors have read about your problem. We've had your problem.”
— The 12bar approach
Why founders choose us
Every early-stage investor writes checks. What separates 12bar is what comes before, during, and long after the wire lands.
Our team has collectively built and worked inside 20+ technology startups — from the first hire to the Series C. We don't just advise from the outside; we've been in the building when things break.
20+ companies builtThe hardest part of building a company isn't raising money — it's finding the first 10 people who will pay for something that barely exists yet. We have frameworks, intros, and scars from doing exactly that.
Pre-seed → growthOur network of 100+ investors — VCs, PE, growth equity, institutional LPs — isn't there to fill a cap table. We connect you to exactly who you need, when you need them, not all at once.
100+ investorsHiring your first sales person. Figuring out pricing. Surviving a down month. We've navigated every inflection point between pre-seed and Series C and can help you recognize them before they blindside you.
Pre-seed through Series CWe don't force your company into a sector box. We invest in exceptional founders working on hard problems across technology — and we stay curious enough to recognize the unexpected idea when we see it.
Seed & Series AOur 100+ member network includes other founders who have been where you are, operators who've scaled what you're building, and investors who have seen patterns you haven't yet encountered.
Founder-backedThe operator edge
Collectively, our team has worked inside technology startups from day zero through growth stage. That range matters — because the advice that helps you at pre-seed can hurt you at Series A. We know when to give which playbook.
Company experience across our team
Earliest possible signal — idea validation, first dollars, first hires.
Finding product-market fit, building repeatable sales motion.
Scaling what's working, building for the next stage of growth.
Operating at scale — the context we bring to earlier-stage work.
“The reason we go up to Series C isn't to brag. It's so we can tell you what Series C investors will expect from you at Seed — and help you build toward it now.”
The network
We don't believe in dumping every contact you have on a founder at once. That's noise. What actually helps is knowing which investor is the right fit for your stage, your sector, and your personality — and making the intro when the timing is right.
Our 100+ member network spans every level of the capital stack. When you need a strategic angel who has sold a company in your space, we know who to call. When you're ready for your Series A, we're already in the room with the right funds.
People who've built what you're building. Pattern-matched advice, warm intros to customers, and the occasional "don't do what I did."
Fund managers across Seed through growth stages. When it's time for your next round, we're already in those relationships.
Investors who think about what you need to look like at Series B and beyond — a perspective worth having early.
Family offices and endowments who bring long-duration capital relationships and credibility at every stage of your company's life.
“We don't just make introductions. We make the right introduction at the right time — and we stay on the thread to make sure it actually moves forward.”
12bar approach to founder supportWho we back
We don't have a checklist. But there are signals that tell us a founder has what it takes to navigate the hard parts.
The founders we back have often been their first customer, worked directly in the industry, or have spent serious time in the field. Surface-level market research doesn't build great companies. Deep insight does.
A few paying customers, strong LOIs, waitlist demand, or a compelling pilot. We invest before things are clean. But we need to see that someone, somewhere has validated that this problem is real and worth solving.
Great companies are built by people who know how to hire well and share ownership. Whether you have co-founders or key early employees, we want to see that you're building a team capable of scaling beyond you.
We back technology companies where software, AI, or proprietary data creates a durable competitive advantage. Services businesses dressed as software don't qualify — but technology-enabled models with real margins do.
Overconfident founders scare us more than uncertain ones. The best founders we've backed knew exactly where their blind spots were — and worked hard to fill them. We'd rather back someone coachable than someone with all the answers.
We look for large and underpenetrated markets, or founders who are creating a category that doesn't exist yet. Either can work. What doesn't work is a small market with no path to expansion.
Let's talk
We read every pitch. If there's a fit, you'll hear back from someone who's been where you are.
